Breweries often collaborate to brew craft beers to learn new techniques from each other, to show support for each other and the craft beer industry, and to provide new offerings for their customers. This is a collaboration of a different kind. On Wednesday, March 7, bands from five Tampa Bay breweries will come together to compete for bragging rights and to benefit Instruments of Change, a non-profit that impacts the lives of kids by giving them musical instruments and teaching them how to play.
The brewery bands who will perform are from Coppertail Brewing Co., Cigar City Brewing, 81 Bay Brewing Co., Tampa Bay Brewing Company, and Dunedin Brewery.
Coppertail’s band consists of staff members Kent Bailey on drums, Sam Bips on saxophone and vocals, James Kovacs on guitar, Tyler Rosenberg on guitar, Kyle Weidner on bass, and Derrick Gough on keyboards and backup vocals.
“There’s something about craft beer that attracts makers including those who make art and music,” said Sam Bips, Coppertail’s Brand Ambassador. “We have had a band at Coppertail for a long time When we expanded our facility we created a space for band practice. We really enjoy jamming and enjoying a beer or two together. This is a chance for us to put all that practice to good use.”
Having the event during Tampa Bay Beer Week made a lot of sense. “There’s so much going on during Tampa Bay Beer Week, we thought people would enjoy having beer from five of the best breweries in Tampa in one place,” said Sam.
Instruments of Change will receive a dollar from the sale of every Coppertail beer as well as proceeds from other participating breweries. Coppertail will have three of their four core beers on tap; Free Dive IPA, Night Swim Porter and Unholy, a Belgian-American Trippel. Additional sponsors of the Brewery Battle of the Bands are Crowbar and Replay Guitar Exchange. Visit Coppertail’s Facebook page for more information.
